About the show:

The Color Purple, a musical based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name, follows Celie, a young Black woman living in the American South who faces abuse, discrimination, and hardship. The musical was adapted from Walker’s novel, with a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. Through music and storytelling, Celie’s journey explores themes of love, courage, identity, sisterhood, and forgiveness as she finds her voice, gains independence, and learns to embrace her worth. As the first Southeast community theatre to produce this show, the ACT is thrilled to bring this production back to the stage after first presenting The Color Purple in 2012.
